The S is way superior but it depends what you want/need from a car. My favourite thing about the X type was the permanent 4 wheel drive which in the winter is extremely useful. This I believe is only on the 2.5 or 3 litre engines. The X was built on a Mondeo chassis when ford over took Jaguar.

The Jaguar S-Type 2.7D from 2004 – 2008 is fitted with an electronic turbo actuator which is controlled by the Engine ECU. The electronic turbo actuator regulates the output of the turbo and when tuned correctly can greatly improve the power, performance and economy of the vehicle by reducing the turbo spool up time and increasing boost pressure.
The module gets its usual start/stop requests from the (R)CCM. Only operates at certain temperatures, voltage above 10.25V and so on. If the (FBH / Wbeasto) module is in lock-out, for example, changing the RCCM is pointless. (The RCCM is a fully computerised module, as with almost all on modern cars like the S-Type.) Y.
The 2.5 x type Petrol version has an official top speed of 140 mph and will get from 0 - 60 in 7.9 seconds. There is so little difference that I would hazard a guess that a well tuned diesel could well out perform the petrol version. The s type 2.7 litre diesel performs almost as well as the 3.0 litre petrol model in spite of being 90 kg heavier.
